So, a few years ago my wife and I decided to explore a Catholic studies program to become Catholics. We were confirmed in Easter of 2002 and felt good about out first Communion – then a political agenda entered from stage left. First, it was the issue of illegal aliens and their “rights” to remain in the USA in spite of their illegal status. Then the Super Highway connecting/combining the USA, Mexico and Canada.
Then the old doctrine of Situation Ethics (c.1960s) came up during a subsequent study session which to me seemed counter to the Sermon on the Mount and the Ten Commandments, i.e., if you need food, go steal some and you could justify the theft of food because you were hungry, notwithstanding the fact that there are many private and public agencies that are prepared to fulfill those needs. The Ten Commandments is an absolute commandment, i.e., “Thou shalt not steal!”
Then came the wacky Baptists from Topeka, Kansas to protest in our parking lot and on our sidewalks because they thought we were all for gay marriage even though their placards said that all soldiers should die in Iraq and that they were glad for that. It was a “target rich” environment that day but our priest promised the local Gestapo that nothing would happen to the “wacko protestors”.
Then came the issues of the old sex scandals and how some of the more visible Bishops were hiding their predators in other Parishes and paying out millions as the result of these old crimes. Then our local Bishop tells us that Islam is a religion of Peace following 9/11 and the atrocities committed by the Taliban in Afghanistan and Iraq and the nuclear program in Iran, not to overlook the secretive works in Lebanon by Syria and Hamas taking over the Gaza.
Now we have the flaky Father Michael Pfleger preaching hatred and racism (white entitlement? – give me a break, I was a Human Resources Director for 30 years and all I ever heard was black entitlement and bogus claims of racial discrimination; I even had EEOC investigators referring to our white employees as “Anglos” [could have skipped that and used the term “Gringos”]) Father Pfleger preaching hatred and making demeaning comments from Obama’s church and Obama saying that Father Pfleger was one of his spiritual guides and mentors early on. I thought the bug-witted “Reverend” Wright had fulfilled that role for Obama. I can only categorize Reverend Wright’s “church” as an African Nationalist organization hell-bent on racial hatred. I can find no love in his sermons for anyone other than African-Americans. People like Father Phleger/Fleger make it difficult for a new Catholic to feel good about having made a decision to join the ranks of Roman Catholicism but then at least he has had his 15 minutes of fame, or rather infamy.
All the politicians are concerned about oil prices and health care and yet since 1973 the Legislative branch has yet to do anything about an overall energy policy except to prohibit drilling and construction of refineries here in the US and just off-shore making us more and more dependent on OPEC. We are now importing more than 60% of our energy from countries that hate us. They turn off their taps and we are in deep poop. Ted Kennedy doesn’t like oil but doesn’t want a wind farm spoiling his view from his “compound” in Kennedovia. I suppose it’s the “not-in-my-backyard” syndrome rather than the brain tumor that controls his positions. They want a nationalized health care similar to the one in Canada but where will the Canadians go to get good health care? And, who is going to pay for another feckless bloated government bureaucracy that tells you when and where you may see a doctor, or may not? If applying for Social Security disability benefits is best done through an attorney, then it may take an attorney to make an appointment for you to see a doctor, of course by then you will be dead, and maybe that is the goal intended by Congress so that benefits will be affordable for the illegal aliens.
Now it comes down to the election and who the next President of the USA will be. We have several choices to make – another eight years of the Clintons; an inexperienced Senator from Illinois that has no accomplishments in the Senate and described by Senator Joe Biden as “clean and articulate” (when did those become qualifications?); Senator John McCain who is all for amnesty for illegals; and Bob Barr who is now a Libertarian and who may be a “spoiler” for McCain as was Perot a spoiler for Bush in 1992.
Perhaps the best course is to close government down for four years and put the military on stand-by alert in the event of another 9/11 – I hope not. Perhaps we hire the Israeli Defense Forces to guard us since Congress is apparently anti-military. Remember this - Free People are never secure and secured people are never free!
And, finally, only about 50% of eligible voters will take the time to vote which means that probably 26% or less of the total US population will decide whom the next President will be. If you don’t vote, then don’t complain . . . .
